About the unit:
6 Main is a 34 bed Medical/Surgical Flex Monitored Unit that specializes in hospice care. 6 Main serves the adult and geriatric population, is very broad in scope, and offers a variety of disease processes to enhance the knowledge base of both novice and seasoned staff.
We are one of the certified disability units in the hospital. Our rooms are designed to accommodate a variety of disabilities as well as bariatric patients.

Purpose:
The graduate nurse GN is an individual who has graduated from an accredited program of professional nursing who has not yet obtained licensure. The GN may perform the activities of a professional nurse as outlined by the Maryland Nurse Practice Act after demonstrating competencies. The nursing graduate will practice only under the direct supervision of a registered nurse who is physically present on the unit. The graduate nurse position allows the nursing graduate to obtain valuable experience and skills while waiting for licensure. The Graduate Nurse or GN may practice based on regulations until the earlier of 90 days from graduation OR receipt of the results from the initial NCLEX examination taken.
Responsibilities:
Zero to two years of experience.
Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families. Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment. Good clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care. Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process. Mobility and visual manual dexterity. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.
***UPMC offers a variety of flexible options in addition to traditional rotating/flexible shifts, special programs exist to work primarily night shifts or weekend shifts with a premium pay differential. Employees hired as or who choose to transition into one of these programs at a later time must have at least 6 months of nursing experience to qualify and may be required to complete any necessary orientation during regular business hours. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification, but will provide training if necessary
